Absent Thinker 24x30"
acrylic on canvas

"There is perhaps no more complete a reality than a chair and a table"

- Patrick White

The paintings of Dawn Stofer are distinguished by their bold use of colour, simple composition and subtle implications of things going on which are not directly represented. They are still lives which allude to the actions of life. The references in these abstracted images, often with somewhat skewed perspectives, are drawn from her memories and imaginations and are in her words "the harvest of elements from my internal archives."

She studied Fine Art in the at the University of Victoria in British Columbia and Art and Education at the University of Calgary in Alberta. During two years in London, England she met the late British painter Guy Roddon, who invited her to draw and paint in the south of France. An enduring influence, he was a dear friend and mentor. In Vancouver, Canada she was represented by the Deborah Worsfold Gallery before her move to Denman, one of the gulf islands off the west coast of British Columbia.

Stofer's paintings are included in many private collections internationally. Her studio and gallery on Denman Island is open to the public year round.
